Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1860-1937). 

A mischievous boy who can fly and who never ages, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Native Americans, fairies, pirates, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside of Neverland.

Alice in Wonderland

“Lewis Carroll” was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), an English author and mathematician. His works of the literary nonsense genre are fun to read for children and adults alike.

The world-famous story of Alice in Wonderland was first published in 1865 as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It has never been out of print and has been made into countless films and TV-series.

Sherlock Holmes

 Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take on almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.

The  now world-famous character first appeared in publication in 1887 and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories.

The Irishman Bram Stoker (1847-1912) was not well known as an author during his lifetime.  Through his interest in theater he became the personal assistant to actor Henry Irving and was later the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London. He finaly came to world fame after he had passed away.

His most famous work Dracula was first published in 1897. It introduces the character of Count Dracula who has ever since been adapted in countless films and many other written works.

Moby Dick

Moby-Dick is a novel by Herman Melville (1819-1891), first published in 1851.

The story tells the adventures of wandering sailor Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab has one purpose on this voyage: to seek out a specific whale—Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. 

In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab’s boat and bit off his leg, which now drives Ahab to take revenge.

The Nibelungenlied, translated as The Song of the Nibelungs, is an epic poem in Middle High German. The story tells of dragon-slayer Siegfried at the court of the Burgundians, how he was murdered, and of his wife Kriemhild’s revenge.

The Nibelungenlied is based on pre-Christian Germanic heroic motifs (the “Nibelungensage”), which include oral traditions and reports based on historic events and individuals of the 5th and 6th centuries.

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) is best known for his historical novels such as The Three Musketeers and it’s sequels, and The Count of Monte Christo. He was born in poverty as the grandson of a French nobleman and a Haitian slave but he soon discovered his talent for writing.  By his death he was well known and respected as a writer.

Set in the 17th century, The Three Musketeers tells the story of d’Artagnan, a poor nobleman, who sets out for Paris to join the musketeers of the guard.

The Communist Manifesto is a short publication written by the German political theorists Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) in 1848. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League’s purposes and programs.

The book contains Marx and Engels’ theories about the nature of society and politics. It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time ,would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only published novel by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). It was published in 1891, based on an earlier version, which was printed as the lead story in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine on 20 June 1890.

The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward, whose wish for his portrait to age rather than him, is fulfilled.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written in the early days of the career of playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616). It tells the story of two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families.

Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was one of the pioneers of the science fiction genre, with ideas, that were certainly far ahead of their times. Grimms’ Fairy Tales

The brothers Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) published seven editions of children’s tales. The first edition was published in 1812, containing 86 stories. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until in 1857 the seventh held 211 tales.

The first volumes were much criticized because they were not regarded as suitable for children and which lead to many changes through the editions.

The german writer and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a significant proponent of the Sturm und Drang movement, and later on a key figure of Weimar Classicism. The Sorrows of Young Werther,  Prometheus, and Faust are just a few of his countless works, which made him one of the most important  poets.

First published in 1808, Goethe’s Faust was based on the  legends of the life of Johann Faust. In Goethe’s interpretation the main character Heinrich Faust makes a bet with Mephisto, the devil, promising his soul if Mephisto can make him a happy and contempt man.

Charles Darwin’s (1809-1882) On the Origin of Species, published on 24 November 1859, is a work of scientific literature which is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology.

Darwin’s book introduced the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. Darwin included evidence that he had gathered on the Beagle expedition in the 1830s and his subsequent findings from research, correspondence, and experimentation.
